The San Franciso Peaks
A volcanic mountain range located just north of the city of Flagstaff. No, one cannot see San Francisco from the top. The name came long before the city did. There are three major peaks with Humphrey’s Peak being the highest at 12,633 feet. The Arizona Snow Bowl ski area is located on Humphrey’s Peak. The mountain itself has a considerable religious significances to several local native american tribes. Highway 180 out of Flagstaff provides one with a great ride through the area and connects with Hwy 64 which leads to the Grand Canyon.
Sunset Crater Volcano, a National Monument, was formed around 1100 a.d. Powerful explosions producing lava flows
changed the landscape of the area. The size of the area is about 3000 acres.
Unfortunately due to bad erosion of the cone the top is closed to visitors. However, the best part of this area is the 40 mile scenic loop ride winding from Sunset Crater to the Wupatki National Monument. see map
Designated a National Monument in 1915 Walnut Canyon is located about 8 miles east of Flagstaff. You can hike the park and actually look into these cliff dwellings that were constructed more than 700 years ago.
About 50 thousand years ago an asteroid collided with the earth creating a crater about 1 mile wide and 550 feet deep. It is the most well known and best preserved meteorite crater on Earth. Meteor Crater is privately owned and operated and is easy to access. Watch the video reenactment of the impact here.
Parts of the old route 66 are still used in Flagstaff and points to the west.
Actually this part of the mother road is fairly fragmented. Riding west from Flagstaff there are some nice parts of the old road to ride. Turn off the interstate 40 at Parks and ride west. You can also get off at Bellemont where Grand Canyon Harley is located on the mother road and ride out to the Pine Breeze Motel for a photos.

Flagstaff Arizona
The town of Seven
Natural Wonders
Grand Canyon Â
Sunset Crater
Oak Creek Canyon
There is certainly a lot to do in a town that holds claim to ‘The City of Seven Natural Wonders’. No doubt being surrounded by the Grand Canyon, Sunset Crater, Walnut Canyon, Oak Creek Canyon, Meteor Crater, Wupatki National Monument and the San Francisco Peaks gives this old Route 66 and pioneer railroad town the right to this honor.
Plenty of places
to ride to out of
Flagstaff
Whatever direction you head out of town you won’t find any better motorcycle rides anywhere else in the state better than Flagstaff. Heading west on Highway 180 takes riders past the Arizona Ski Bowl, through the San Francisco Peaks and on to the Grand Canyon.
Point your bike south and you will experience the natural beauty of Oak Creek Canyon, ending up in the ‘Red Rock Country’ of Sedona, Arizona.
Another great ride out of Flagstaff is to head north on Highway 89 to Sunset Crater and the Painted Desert. Riding to the east you will find ‘Meteor Crater’, one of the largest known meteor impact locations in the world.
There’s a lot to see
and do while you are in Flagstaff
Lowell Observatory on Mars hill, not far from downtown made the discovery of Pluto in 1930. Flagstaff was a major stop on Route 66, the ‘Mother Road’ and the Santa Fe continues to board rail passengers headed both east and west. Not far from Flagstaff still stands the old
Pine Breeze motel where Wyatt and Billy in ‘Easy Rider’ were turned away with a ‘No Vacancy’ sign because they were bikers. Although it is not in business anymore the owners of the property allow bikers to camp for the nite at no charge . Just head west on I-40 a few miles and get off at the Bellemont exit. Ride to the Harley-Davidson dealer on the south side of I-40 and continue past the dealer just a little ways and you will see it on the left.
