Ride the
Rim Country
Tonto Natural Bridge
Known as the largest natural travertine, limestone, bridge in the world, the Tonto Natural Bridge stands at 183 feet high over a 400 foot long tunnel and measures 150 feet wide. Located near the small community of Pine, Arizona, off of state highway 87, Tonto Natural Bridge was dedicate as state park in 1957. The park is closed on Tuesdays and Wednesdays.
Mongollon Rim
The southwestern rim of the Colorado Plateau provides bikers with some very scenic rides in the state of Arizona.
Rising from about 4000 feet on the south side to about 7000 feet on the upper plateau.  The rim extends about 200 miles across the state of Arizona from around Williams, Arizona east to New Mexico. What is known as the ‘Rim Country’ by Arizonans is the section that runs from just south of Clint’s Well on Highway 87 southeast to Christopher Creek on highway 260. Although the ‘Rim’ road scenic drive is mostly unpaved there are still some great riding up through Pine and Strawberry on highway 87 and then from Payson to Show Low on highway 260. The Tonto National Forest offers some great photo ops and camping for bikers along the way.
Strawberry
Arizona
Lying beneath the Mongollon Rim this small community is surrounded by the pines of the Tonto National Forest. The name comes from the fact that wild strawberries were plentiful here. The oldest standing school house in Arizona is located in Strawberry.
Pine
Arizona
First established by in 1879 by Mormons, Pine, like the adjacent community of Strawberry, is nestled in the Tonto National Forest on highway 87 below the Mongollon Rim and just north of Payson. Elevation here is 5,448 feet. Stop in at Sidewinders Saloon for a cold one and something to eat along the way.
The
Beeline Highway
Highway 87 south from Payson to Phoenix is referred to as the ‘Beeline’. It is a quick route to take from the valley, Phoenix, north to the high country, four lanes all the way. This highway is some great riding as the road splits away from either direction providing some spectacular scenery.

Payson, Arizona
Arizona’s Rim Country
We call it
‘Zane Grey Country’
The Payson area was a favorite of the
early western fiction writer Zane Grey.
He owned a cabin near the Mongollon
Rim. Located just south of the Mongollon Rim, Payson was once known as Green Valley or Union Park. The town is named in honor of Senator Payson who at the time was chairman of the congressional Post Office and Post Road committee of the United States Congress.
The Mongollon Rim and
Tonto Natural Bridge
Pronounced ‘mug-ee-own’, the Mongollon Rim, which is the southern edge of the great Colorado Plateau, receives its name in hono of an early spanish governor of New Mexico. Ten
miles north of Payson, on the way to Pine, one can visit the largest known
travertine natural bridge in the world.
Tonto Natural Bridge State Park is one stop along Highway 87 that you should take the time to visit. The road is paved all the way to the park.
Stay on your bike and
enjoy the scenery
Some say that to enjoy the beauty of the area one should visit the lakes and hike the mountain trails. I say, ‘enjoy the area and stay on you motorcycle and ride’! Get your map out and count the ways you can head out of Payson. Head north to Winslow through breathtaking forested mountains riding up over the Mongollon Rim towards Eber and Show Low. Ride north through the communities of Pine and Strawberry and over to the Verde Valley. Head south down to the Bee Line highway, Highway 87, to Phoenix. Take Highway 188 through Pumpkin Center past Roosevelt Lake.
Experience the beauty of
Arizona’s Rim Country
If you have a whole day to ride out of Payson head northeast on Highway 260 to Heber. Just past Heber head north on Highway 277 to Highway 377. Highway 377 will take you north to Holbrook. At Holbrook catch the Interstate 40 west about 30 miles to Wislow. Take Highway 87 south out of Winslow all the way back to Payson. There is no better ride to experience the beauty of the Mongollon Rim. No matter what direction you take out of Payson it will be the right one. Even if you don’t get to where you are going you will definately have a nice ride. There is no doubt about it!
