What do you do if you have a mechanical break down on a ride out of town?

Having a complete tool kit for your bike is the most important item that you can carry with you when you ride.  Whether you put one together yourself or buy a pre-made kit you will be glad to have it when you need it.

Here’s a few on the market kits that are available through various retailers.  It goes without saying that if you are riding an import than you will need to buy a metric tool kit.

Make sure the kit that you buy has the tools in it that fit the various fittings on your bike.

Here’s a few that we would recommend taking a look at.

CruzTools Econo Kit H1 for Harley Davidsons

Price is about $80. Check it out at the Biker Hiway website.

If you're on a tight budget but still want a complete tool kit, consider the H1. Five combination wrenches cover most fasteners, and an eight-inch adjustable wrench handles the rest, including most axle nuts. Locking pliers, an aluminum-body LED flashlight, tire gauge, hex and Torx keys, and much more will help get you back on the road in no time.

Harley-Davidson Snap-On Tool Kit

Price is listed at $200 but I found it at Latus Motors for $194. Maybe you can find it 4 less.

This tool kit was developed specifically for Harley-Davidson by Snap-On to perform the most functions with the least amount of tools and weight. Provides all the right tools, without compromising quality or damaging your motorcycle's hardware. Lifetime warranty. Designed to provide the most tools in the least amount of space, this tool kit rolls into a compact pouch for easy transport.

BikeMaster 17 Piece Tool Kit

Price are around $70 for this great metric kit.  I found it at Orange Custom Cycle for about $65.  Designed specifically for metric vehicles. Great for bikes that have a poor or no tool kit with them. Don't get caught on the road tool-less this could save you a long walk. Open ended wrenches: 11, 12, 13, 14, 16 and 17mm sizes.10mm combination wrench.

What do you do if you have a flat on that  long ride out in the middle on nowhere?

Even though motorcycle tires are a lot better than they were there is still a chance of picking up a sharp object out on the road.  Most long distance riders carry some sort of pressure to pump the tire up enough to get to a repair center.  However, you still need the material to repair the tire before you re-inflate it.  Here’s a few kits that you can consider buying to put in your saddlebag.

Genuine Innovations Motorcycle and ATV Tire Repair Kit       Price:  $60.00

Let's face it, flat tires are a drag. But it doesn’t have to slow you down.

For 20 years, Genuine Innovations has pioneered the technology behind CO2 tire inflation. Whether you ride a cruiser, an ATV/UTV or a scooter, it’s a fact that flat tires WILL happen. Whether you’re going around the block or around the world, don’t be caught without one!

Posse Tire Repair & Inflation Kit               Price:  $32.95

Pit Posse makes a great co2 tire repair kit much like Genuine Innovations but for about half the price.  Don't be stranded again with a flat tire. Each large capacity cartridge will fill a standard motorcycle front or rear tire.  Kit includes necessary items for repair of tubeless or tube tires.

Kit includes: CO2 inflator, 3-16 gram CO2 cartridges, handle reamer and installer with 5 string plugs, rubber cement, metal scuffer, tube patches, air gauge, knife, valve core remover & convenient carry bag.

Stop and Go Fix-n-Flate Motorcycle Tire Repair Kit        Price:  $30.00

Information and Details about the Stop and Go Fix-n-Flate Motorcycle Tire Repair Kits

made by Stop and Go.  After performing the unpleasant task of dismounting your deflated tube-type tire, you can patch the tube with these six feather edge cold patches that self vulcanize from friction heat and rubber cement.   You need not dismount your tubeless tire as this kit includes five reinforced rubber string plugs for an 'on the wheel' repair using the split-eye needle insertion tool.   This brand new kit comes in a heavy-duty zippered canvas bag that measures 7" in diameter x 1 1/4" thick and weighs only 14 oz.   It features the Engine-Air Pump with a longer 5 foot hose and quick release lever. Motorcycles with easy access to their spark plugs can utilize this unit for an unlimited supply of clean outside air. It works on twins and multi-cylinder engines

Not recommended for Honda ST Series motorcycles or late model BMW motorcycles because the pump adapters will not fit your cylinder head.   All Harley-Davidsons use the 14mm adapter except the Sportster which uses the 12mm

What do YOU do if you have a dead battery when you get on your bike to take a ride?

Well, first kick the side of the barn and then blame yourself for not turning off your iginition, perhaps?  What you should have done is purchase a ‘battery tender’ and keep it plugged in to your bike when you are not using it.  You could also start not using the ‘kill’ switch when you turn off your bike and use the key ignition instead.

Here’s a few battery tenders that will keep your battery loaded and ready for when every you feel the need to hop on and hit the road.

Harley-Davidson’s Super Smart Battery Tender            Price:  $40.00

Oatman, Arizona

Ride Arizona’s Historic Route 66 from Seligman west to Kingman and on to the old mining town of Oatman.  Ride the high desert and the Black Mountains in the Mohave Desert.

Click on map for the google directions for this ride.

This ride is 120 miles one way.    If you continue on the Bullhead City, Arizona near Laughlin, Nevada where the annual Laughlin River Run is held it is another 15 miles.

There is plenty of lodging available in Kingman, Arizona or the Bullhead Laughlin area.    Leaving Seligman with a full tank and topping it off in Kingman you won’t encounter any stress from low fuel!  Ride Safe!

Cottonwood

Once called the ‘Biggest Little Town of Arizona’ Cottonwood and
the surrounding area has a lot to offer bikers visiting the area.  It is especially nice on winter rides due to the mild weather during the day. The city of Cottonwood is in the ‘heart’ of the Verde valley.

Jerome

One of the most popular destinations in Arizona for motorcycles on the
weekend.  Amost every Saturday or Sunday, weather permitting, main street is alive with bikers and their motorcycles lined up along the street.  A great place to show off your ride since Jerome is a major tourist attraction.

Tortilla Flat

This ‘wide spot’ in the road called Tortilla Flat is rated as one of the top
ride destinations in Arizona due to it’s proximity to the metro area of the capitol of Arizona, Phoenix.  The twisty road and beautiful desert fauna is a plus as well.  Located in the Superstition Wilderness along the Salt River, this scenic stretch of road is about a 40 mile round trip from Apache Junction.  The road is paved all the to Tortilla Flat and then the road turns to dirt all the way to the Roosevelt Dam.
