Robert

McCulloch

The founder of Lake Havasu City and McCulloch chainsaws was born in Missouri and inherited his grandfather’s fortune.  His grandfather made his fortune by implementing Thomas Edison’s electrical power plants in cities around the world.  Graduating from Stanford he built racing engines but found his niche in the chainsaw business.  As he pursued the outboard motor business he was led to Lake Havasu.  Here he created Lake Havasu City and bought the London Bridge dismantled it and reconstructed it in Lake Havasu City.

Lake Havasu

Lake Havasu is a reservoir on the Colorado River behind the Parker Dam which was built in the 1930’s.  The reservoir supplies water to both Arizona and California.  Most of the attraction of tourists to the area, 3.5 million visitors per year, come for the lake’s water sports.  It is possibly the best lake for fishing in the state of Arizona.  Anglers catch largemouth bass, striped bass, blue gill, crappie and catfish among others.  Fishing is popular all year long.  World Cup racing with Grand Prix Hydroplane racing boats, national boat shows and parades run every year.  Havasu Lake is also home to the International World Jet Ski Final Races and multiple professional fishing tournaments.

Spring Break

Spring Break for college students is also an annual event at Lake Havasu.  With water temperatures ranging from 75 to 85, the island and canal with the London Bridge, it is a perfect locale for this type of activity.  With an arid climate and temperatures ranging from the 70’s in the winter and reaching the mid 120’s during the summer there is always activity near the shore.  Indeed, the pristine waters, warm temps, and ‘bikini clad’ girls warrant the name ‘Arizona Riviera’

Parker Dam

Parker Dam, constructed in the 1930’s is a concrete dam that crosses the Colorado River.  It is the deepest dam in the world and generates hydroelectric power.  The dam straddles the border of Arizona and California.  The dam holds back around 210 billion gallons of water creating Lake Havasu.  The power plant has four turbines producing electricity at 97% efficiency.  The dam also provides a route across the river allowing vehicles a way to the other side without traveling to Parker to make the crossing.

Havasu Landing

Casino Resort

On the California shore of Lake Havasu across from Lake Havasu City, Arizona one can enjoy state of the art electronic gaming at the Havasu Landing Resort and Casino.  Havasu Landing Marina provides fuel, slips and boat ramps.  One can catch the DreamCatcher ferry on the hour or half hour depending on which way you are traveling.  Camping is also available for RVs and tent campers.  Havasu Landing also has a fully stocked grocery store.

A recreational wonderland for water sports

It is really difficult to imagine the Lake Havasu area back in the 50’s before industrialist Robert P. McCulloch arrived.  The dam that created the lake, Parker Dam, was finished in 1938, and Mr. McCulloch arrived around 25 years later to test his outboard motors.  Instead, he created a ‘planned community’ that has become a recreational wonderland for water sports enthusiasts in Arizona , California and around the world!

A world-class tourist

destination

Many of us remember seeing the London Bridge, where it originally spanned the Thames River, in London, England.  The London Bridge now spans part of the Colorado River, a canal that flows past the London Bridge Beach at the edge of town.   Walking along the boardwalk of the canal provides the visitor with an opportunity to examine life on the lake in Lake Havasu City!

The roads are good

and the weather

is great year round

Although there are a lot of boats in Lake Havasu City, there is also some great motorcycle riding.  Head your ride south towards Parker Dam.  It is a scenic ride around the head of the lake to the dam and then along the Colorado river to the town of Parker.  Just past Parker you can head towards Blythe, California, or Quartzite and Hope, Arizona.  Riding north out of Lake Havasu City can take you to Laughlin, Nevada, or Oatman and Kingman, Arizona.  From Kingman you can connect with the Mother Road, Route 66. Either way you choose to go the ride is extra nice and the weather is great!  Take a look at the Google Map.

Parker Dam is the deepest dam in the world

The Parker Dam, south of Lake Havasu City is the deepest dam in the world.  Havasu Landings, the Indian casino on the California side, can be reached by taking the ‘Dream Catcher’ ferry across the lake.  Catch a cruise on the lake aboard the paddle boat ‘Dixie Bell’.  The Dixie Bell has a full bar for your enjoyment.  Check out the directory on the right side of the page for more information on Lake Havasu City.

Visit nearby Williams

Williams, Arizona was named after ‘Old Bill” (the mountain man) Williams. ‘Old Bill’ trapped in the area in the early to mid 1800’s and was a guide for John Fremont’s search for a route to California.  Founded in the late 1800’s, Williams was not unlike many other pioneer towns in that it was a popular place for the early settlers to farm , ranch and cut timber        more
