Prescott, Arizona

World’s Oldest Rodeo

Arizona’s first state capitol

Prescott, Arizona, pronounced ‘Press-skit’ was Arizona’s first state capitol.  Founded in 1864 on Granite Creek, the source of the placer gold discovered around 1838.  The town has a ‘midwest’ feel unlike any other Arizona town.  Due to the war between the states and southern sympathizers living in the Tucson area , president Lincoln selected Prescott as the new capitol and encouraged folks from the mid-west to move here.

There are over 500 homes near the center of town that are listed on the National Historic Register.

The town of Prescott is also known for being the home of the world’s oldest rodeo, and there are records to back up the claim.

On any one weekend, as long as the weather permits, downtown Prescott is bustling with tourists and local towns people. The center square park with the Yavapai County courthouse provides a great central location for various events throughout the year.  On the west side of the square across the street there are several old saloons or bars, the Palace Bar and the Bird Cage Saloon to name a few.

The Palace is one of the oldest bars in Arizona having been a movie set in times past.  You can also see several old relics from the days of old and old photos as well.

Wyatt Earp, Doc Holliday, and Big Nose Kate are just a few of the old west celebrities that frequented the saloons.  Rumor has it that Doc Holliday won ten thousand dollars in one hand of poker at the Palace.

Downtown Prescott is a popular destination for Arizona bikers

Although the downtown square is a popular spot for biker’s to hang out, there are a lot of other things going on as well.  Several crafts and antique bazars along with holiday music festivities are held annual at the courthouse square.  Antique stores, restaurants, and saloons line the streets nearby.  If your are interested in the history of Arizona, the Sharlot Hall museum is only a block away.

There are several great motorcycle rides out of Prescott

Prescott is located in the northern part of central Arizona.  It is a mile high in elevation.  Riding season is pretty much year round if you don’t mind riding in the cold.  The rainy season is in the summer usually from July thru August and September.

There are four main routes a biker can take to get out of town, two of which reach desert elevations in less than an hour.  Within an hour one can be enjoying the statuesque giant saguaro cactus or getting your kicks on route sixty-six.  Check out the rides page for a detailed review of some of these rides out of Prescott.
