Tortilla Flat
Arizona
The Superstition
Wilderness
A great
motorcycle ride
out of Phoenix
This ‘wide spot’ in the road called Tortilla Flat is rated as one of the top ride destinations in Arizona due to it’s proximity to the metro area of the capitol of Arizona, Phoenix. The twisty road and unrivaled natural beauty is a true biker’s paradise. Located in the Superstition Wilderness along the Salt River, this scenic stretch of road is about a 40 mile round trip from Apache Junction. The road is paved all the way to Tortilla Flat and soon after it becomes a gravel road that continues another 30 miles or so to the Roosevelt Dam.
Spring and Fall
are the best time
to ride
The best time to take this ride is in the spring or fall to enjoy the unique color of the local desert and mountain fauna. Although Tortilla Flat is privately owned and operated it is officially recognized by the state with its own post office. The food at the Tortilla Flat Restaurant and Saloon is outstanding as well as the service. During the high season don’t be surprised if it takes you a while to be seated. Visitors come from around the world to experience the beauty of the Superstition Wilderness.
A very twisty
road with a
low speed limit
Tortilla Flat got it’s name from early travelers who were stranded on the flat when the river flooded. They ran out of food with the exception of flour and they survived off of the tortillas they made with it. Although you can’t see much of the Salt River along the way, there are three hydroelectric dams before the river reaches Mesa, Arizona. The Mormon Flat dam creates Canyon Lake which you get a good view of on the ride to Tortilla Flat. Take some time to check out the reference links on this page before you go. This is a very twisty road with a low speed limit. Take your time and enjoy the trip. You can’t be in a hurry if you are going to Tortilla Flat!
